Highlands, North Carolina is one of the many areas in the "quieter side of the Smokies." Just because it's classified as quiet doesn't mean you will have to sacrifice fun on your Smoky Mountain Vacation. The waters of the mountains are known for many things and chief among them is the thrill of travelling down it on your raft, canoe, or kayak. The Nantahala Outdoor Center offers full whitewater rafting on the Nantahala, French Broad, Chatooga and Cheoah rivers, just to name a few. Primitive Outback, Inc. has kayaking trips on the Little Tennessee River and Rolling Thunder River Co. offers a wide selection of whitewater rafting trips and camping. 

If you're looking for a relaxing change of pace and long for the days of old living outdoors, Highlands offers excellent campground areas. At Cliffside Lake and Van Hook Glade offers excellent views of Dry and White Water Falls. It also provides campers with swimming, fishing and hiking trails. Open year round, Franklin RV Park has full hook up, free Wi-Fi and Satellite TV and is pet friendly. While camping in the area be sure to check out one of several botanical gardens. For more than 80 years the Highlands Biological Station has provided education and research of the rich natural heritage of the Highlands Plateau.

Wanting to see the beauty of western North Carolina from a different perspective? Then take a ride on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Boasting 53 miles of track, 2 tunnels and 25 bridge, the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad is sure to please with its scenic journeys across the fertile valleys and river gorges near The Great Smoky Mountains. Treks begin in Bryson City, but stretch out to remote locations bringing sights and beauty to all aboard. 

Golfing is also a pass time of the mountain communities. There are many Highlands Golf Courses in the area providing the beauty and scenic nature mountain golfers have grown to love. Trillium links is one of the many locations in the Smoky Mountains for a truly unique golfing experience. Inspired by the majesty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this 18-hole championship course creates exciting challenges at every hole.
